Oct 10 – Arrive Cairo

Upon arrival, we’ll be greeted warmly by our Cairo-based staff. They will assist with securing our Egyptian visas, and then we’ll be escorted to our luxurious hotel where a refreshing welcome and cocktail await. The stylish Sofitel el Gezirah Hotel enjoys a privileged location on a Nile island in the heart of Cairo. Every room affords a dramatic view of the river and city, and a wide range of superb dining options is sure to please every palate. The balance of our afternoon and evening is free to relax and enjoy on your own.

Oct 11 – Cairo

Journey into the plains of Giza to behold one of the world’s greatest wonders: the Pyramids. We’ll ponder the enigmatic Sphinx, a colossal carved figure of a recumbent lion with the head of a man. Three thousand years ago, King Thutmose IV, while still but a young prince, was resting here in the shade when the Sphinx appeared to him in a dream, promising him the kingdom if he would fully uncover the colossus partially buried beneath shifting desert sand… this ancient tale is recorded in a stone stele erected by the King between the lion’s giant paws.

We’ve also made arrangements for an in-depth guided visit through the Solar Boat Museum to see the beautifully-restored, 4,600-year-old funerary Solar Boat of King Cheops, the oldest existing river craft in the world. Of course, no visit to Egypt is complete without a camel ride… After this fun and memorable experience, we’ll return to our luxury retreat in the city.

Oct 12 – Cairo & the Egyptian Museum

We ascend this morning within the medieval, 12th century walls of the Citadel. From the impressive Mohammed Ali Mosque, built in the mid 1800’s, we’ll have commanding views over the city. We continue our exploration through Old Cairo to see the Synagogue of Ben Ezra, and stop by the colorful Khan el Khalil bazaar.

In the afternoon, our specially-arranged visit to the Egyptian Museum is highlighted by an exclusive AARP meeting with Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Dr. Hawass is in charge of the protection of all of Egypt’s ancient sites, and his informative presentation provides insight and context for our guided visit through the renowned collection of this world-famous museum, including the golden treasures of Tutankhamen. This enriching afternoon is the perfect introduction to the fascinating history of Egypt and the many ancient wonders that we’ll discover on our cruise.

Enjoy a free and relaxing evening, a great opportunity to sample the excellent dining options at our hotel.

Oct 13 – Cairo / Abu Simbel / Aswan

This morning, we fly to Abu Simbel to discover the remarkable temples of Ramses II, where ancient Egyptians carved four 67-foot high figures of King Ramses II out of solid rock. We also visit the smaller but equally impressive Temple of Queen Nefertari, where Ramses II took the unusual step of having the temple façade decorated with imposing statues of himself, his favorite wife Queen Nefertari, and their children.

The modern history of Abu Simbel and the temples’ historic rescue from the rising waters of Lake Nasser is a story as amazing as the ancient legends. The completion of the High Dam in 1972 threatened this extraordinary site, but a massive undertaking funded by the USA succeeded in literally transporting the ancient temples to higher ground, 200 feet above their original site.

When you stand before the enormous figures of Ramses II, you will begin to fathom this amazing engineering feat. Abu Simbel was not a free-standing temple; the carved figures of the Pharaoh were hewn into the face of a towering cliff. The rescue operation involved sawing the rock face into more than 1,000 pieces, some weighing close to 15 tons! The move and reconstruction process was completed with such precision that every year on February 22 and October 22 – only one day later than originally planned – the rays of the sun rise above the horizon to penetrate deep into the temple sanctuary to illuminate the interior statues.

Amazed and in awe, we fly to Aswan to board our deluxe Nile ship, the Sonesta Sun Goddess. Settle-in to your comfortable outside stateroom and enjoy lunch onboard. Later in the afternoon, we step aboard feluccas – the traditional river craft of the Nile – for a leisurely sailing excursion around Kitchener’s Island. This evening’s dinner onboard is followed by entertainment featuring lively and colorful Nubian folk traditions.

Oct 14 – Aswan / Kom Ombo / Edfu

In startling contrast to the ancient marvels that we’ve explored, this morning’s highlight is an achievement that belongs to modern Egypt, the remarkable High Dam at Aswan. We’ll also see the granite quarries where ancient Egyptians engineered the seemingly impossible - creating their towering obelisks. Of note, we’ll see the famous Unfinished Obelisk, still attached to the bedrock. Then we venture into the lovely Philae Temple, dedicated to the Goddess Isis.

We return to ship for lunch as we set sail for Kom Ombo. Our afternoon is spent along a picturesque bend of the Nile where crocodiles used to sun themselves. Here we visit the unusual twin temple of Kom Ombo, honoring Horus, the falcon-headed Sun God, and Sobek, the Crocodile God. Back onboard ship, our Captain hosts welcome cocktails and another fine dinner onboard as our cruiser charts a course for Edfu.

Oct 15 – Edfu / Cruising the Nile to Luxor

We alight in Edfu and tour the Temple of Horus, one of the best preserved of the ancient world. Horus, the Sun God, played a prominent role in daily life, and the attention to detail in the design and construction here makes it easy to imagine the importance that ancient Egyptians placed upon temple worship. After lunch, we set sail for Luxor. You can relax in the Lounge or on the Sun Deck as timeless vistas of river life unfold along our journey down the Nile.

After dinner this evening, join fellow guests for a festive Galabeya Party onboard, featuring this traditional and comfortable garb of Egypt.

Oct 16 – Luxor

Step ashore this morning to explore the monuments of the Nile’s West Bank, including the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. We’ll stand in awe before the towering Colossi of Memnon and walk into the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. After lunch onboard, we explore the stunning Temples of Luxor and Karnak. The beautiful Temple of Amun-Re is considered by many to be the most awe-inspiring of all Egyptian monuments, and the great Hypostyle Hall is the largest hall of any temple in the world. Tonight’s dinner is followed by the spectacular Karnak Sound & Light presentation. Hear thrilling tales of the Pharaohs as the illuminations bring ancient carvings and hieroglyphics to life.

Oct 17 – Luxor / Cairo

We disembark ship this morning for our return flight to Cairo, where we’ll be transferred by air-conditioned motorcoach to the deluxe Fairmont Tower Heliopolis Hotel, conveniently located not far from the airport.

Oct 18 - Cairo Departure

Following breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our homeward flights.

>Fine Dining on the Sun Goddess

Bountiful breakfast buffets, delicious lunches… and fine à la carte dining with wine every evening

Travelers love the Sun Goddess for its great shipboard cuisine, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented.

You’ll arise each morning to a bountiful breakfast buffet in the ship’s bright and spacious Dining Room. Enjoy a lighter start to your day with tempting breakfast breads warm from the oven, fresh fruits, multi-grain cereals, juice, and yogurt. Or choose a hot and hearty breakfast with eggs, meats, and omelets made-to-order. It’s a tempting buffet, so feel free to return for more.

The luncheon buffet in the Dining Room offers an array of appetizers, salads, and entrees. Chicken, beef, seafood, and vegetarian options are available, complemented with side dishes and vegetables. Come evening, the Dining Room ambience is comfortably elegant with leisurely à la carte dinners served course by course.

You’ll delight in the wonderful Middle Eastern influences in many of the dishes, from grilled vegetables and kebabs to couscous and richly spiced entrees. But the cuisine is decidedly international, with a strong Continental flair. For choice, quality and service, it’s like dining in any 5-star hotel in the USA or Europe. But regardless of your meal selections, please save room for dessert! The Sun Goddess pastry chefs are very good.

During the day, the Dining Room dress is comfortable and casual; there’s no need to change from your off-shore touring or onboard-relaxing clothes. In the evenings the dress is generally informal, what some might call business casual attire, with smart casual wear appropriate for the captain’s welcome cocktail reception.

In the afternoon, you’re invited to the Lounge for High Tea. Choose from freshly-brewed coffee, a selection of teas, and – of course – a tempting array of light snacks and delicious cakes, cookies and pastries.

Of course, the Sun Goddess has a shipboard state-of-the-art purification system for water and produce.

>Discover Petra & Jordan before our Cruise

Begin your trip in spectacular Petra & Jordan!
Exclusively for AARP Members… for only $999 per person

Join General Tours president Bob Drumm before your cruise for this exclusive journey through Jordan. We’ll discover extraordinary sites from the times of the Romans, Nabateans, and Crusaders…

Two nights right at the entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra offers plenty of time to explore this spectacular archeological treasure …one of the ‘7 New Wonders of the World.’  On our leisurely itinerary, we’ll also see Moses’ traditional burial place overlooking the Holy Land, climb through the Crusader town of Kerak, wander through the stunning Roman ruins of Jerash, and explore the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum.

Oct 6: Arrive Amman

Upon arrival at Amman Airport, we’ll be met and transferred to our deluxe hotel in the heart of the city, the beautiful Le Meridien Amman Hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure.

Oct 7: Amman – Explore Jerash and Ajlun

This morning we’ll enjoy an introductory tour through Jordan’s capital, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. We continue on north of Amman into the picturesque hills of ancient Gilead to Jerash, one of the best-preserved examples of a provincial Roman city and often referred to as the ‘Pompeii of the East.’ We’ll see the magnificent Triumphal Arch, the Hippodrome, the Forum and the impressive Roman Bridge and then walk along a wide, marble-colonnaded avenue to the magnificent Temple of Artemis. After exploring this ancient wonder, we tour the 12th century Saracen castle at Ajlun, a dramatic edifice from the time of the Crusaders.

Oct 8: Petra / Along the King's Way to Petra

Today we’ll journey along the King’s Way to Madaba to marvel at Byzantine mosaics. We’ll see Mt. Nebo, the traditional burial site of Moses, and explore the ancient Crusader town of Kerak. We arrive in Petra, one of the ‘7 New Wonders of the World,’ where we’ll check-in to the Mövenpick Hotel, perfectly located by the entrance to this ancient city.

Oct 9:  Explore Petra

Today’s guided touring explores Petra, a spectacular architectural marvel and an important link in ancient caravan routes. Nestled among the dramatic cliffs of southern Jordan near the Jordan Rift Valley, the entire city is carved into the sides of a deep gorge, the only entrance through a narrow opening called the Siq. As we enter the lost city of Petra, emerging from between the 100-foot cliffs, a remarkable vista unfolds: Temples, tombs, and dwellings chiseled out of solid, rose-hued stone. Our comprehensive guided visit through this World Heritage Site includes a horse and carriage ride.

Oct 10:  Land of Lawrence of Arabia / Return to Amman

Following breakfast, we journey to Wadi Rum, a historic and illustrious site with a colorful past strongly associated with Lawrence of Arabia. We’ll meet local Bedouins and explore the dramatic desert landscapes in their 4x4 vehicles. We continue onward to Amman International Airport for our evening flight to Cairo, Egypt, where we join our fellow travelers at the luxurious Sofitel el Gezirah Hotel.

$999 per person, double occupancy.  $1,369 per person, single occupancy. Plus airfare.
